About the artist
Nellie Peoples is a designer-maker currently working and living in Brisbane, Australia. She is a member of Bench, a collective workshop space for emerging contemporary jewellers. Her practice is in jewellery and small objects, in which she explores the constellation made between objects and people; and how the object itself plays into the connections of those who surround it by representing on-going narratives. Her designs and objects highlight and reflect the conservation of those connections that encircles the object with a focus on special moment, beloved people, or a particular places.

Elevations Series
In this body of work Peoples explores the mark an object makes upon the wearer and viewer alike, with a particular focus on the register of place. Through the objects Peoples examines how place, in this case Brisbane, has patterned her thinking and influenced making. In the making process Peoples explored Brisbane by walking the streets and recording her experiences within the Central Business District (CBD).
The objects are records of her explorations. By choosing prominent building facades on her explorations she uses their elevations as a “canvas” to sketch the streetscapes directly onto the elevations. The sketches are made on the street which the building stands. The making in place. The sketches are then etched and filled with hues that take inspiration from the original facade. In her explorations Peoples sought to discover what makes Brisbane unique, to investigate why and respond to her findings through observing, documenting and making.
