About
When thinking about Queensland, visions of the sunshine state are often of warm weather, beaches and blue skies. Queensland is much, much more. It is a place of contrasts and extremes, and a state of mind. Queensland is its history, its people, flora and fauna and its’ landscape. Identifying with Queensland has been captured by a mood, a character, or an atmosphere unique to this state.
The Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (Queensland Chapter) Inc., known as JMGQ, presents The State of Shine. JMGQ is a membership based not-for-profit organisation that runs on the creative energy and enthusiasm of its volunteers and membership. It represents members across Queensland in cities and regional areas. It has an established history of playing a constructive and influential role in contemporary practice within Queensland, as well as nationwide.
JMGQ has drawn out themes and connections between the artworks to begin a discussion about what is it to design and make in Queensland, within the broader framework of Australia. The State of Shine examines our connection to place through thinking and making, within the sphere of contemporary jewellery and small objects. The exhibition was originally shown at Radiant Pavilion 2019 at the Brunswick Street Art Gallery, in Melbourne. Participating artists were invited to create artworks responding to Redcliffe and the Morten Bay region, for the exhibition at the Redcliffe Art Gallery.
